How to meet people as a PhD student - networking and making friends

3 December 2020

PhD student Intisar gives you, her fellow PhD students, her top tips to network and make new friends whilst at UCL!

People talking

Surrounded by world-renowned researchers at the forefront of their fields, pursuing a PhD at UCL is an excellent decision. The dedication and passion are easily absorbed by new PhD students to maintain the high-quality research required from a leading research university. To ensure a smooth transition into UCL, the doctoral school organise a series of introductory events where one can meet new PhD students, Postdocs and senior members of staff.

Other opportunities to network include:

Clubs and societies

There is something for everyone as UCL offer over 300 clubs and societies including the salsa society, the board games society and the Harry Potter society

Departmental socials

Join social events in your department and introduce yourself to others in your research group. These will be the individuals you’ll be primarily working with therefore it’s important to get to know each other.

Doctoral Skills Development Programme

There are numerous courses one can undertake from the doctoral school to learn vital skills and meet other likeminded students.

With regards to COVID-19 precautions, some students will initially be studying remotely. Although not the traditional start to the PhD journey at UCL, opportunities to interact and network will still be available. Remember, everyone is in the same boat and therefore students, Postdocs and everyone else will be understanding. Don’t worry, I’m sure you’ll settle right in and enjoy your time at UCL!
