MSc Advanced Biomedical Imaging 

This MSc is taught by leading scientists and clinicians. It will equip imaging researchers with detailed knowledge of the advanced imaging techniques, which provide new insights into cellular, molecular and functional processes.

Students will undertake an independent research-based project in UCL's world-class laboratories and be closely linked to The UCL Centre for Advanced Biomedical Imaging, a unique research environment with 11 state-of-the-art preclinical imaging technologies.  Biomedical imaging is an interdisciplinary field and we bring together biology, medicine, physics, engineering, communication skills, and even art.

Research Project (60 credits) 

Research Projects will be experiment based and focus on the application of taught skills and experience gained in CABI. The research project accounts for one third of the final grade. 

 

Who is this course for?

This MSc is ideal for students with a background in biology, chemistry, physics, engineering or medicine. We require a minimum of a second-class Bachelor's degree in a scientific or medical discipline from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. If you did not study your degree in the UK, please see our International Equivalences page.

This programme is designed for both basic scientists and clinicians of all levels who wish to gain a thorough background in biomedical imaging and translational medical research, either for further study in this field, any other area of preclinical or biological research, or the pharmaceutical industry. Students should have an interest in translational medical imaging, specifically the development and use of pre-clinical and experimental imaging technologies, such as MRI or optical imaging, to detect, monitor and prevent illnesses such as cancer, heart diseases and neurodegeneration.

Case-study Students:
Stephanie has a BSc in Biological Science. She’d like to do a PhD in the biomedical field but is not entirely sure of which discipline. UCL’s MSc in Advanced Biomedical Imaging (ABI) will expose her to wide-ranging conditions, such as Alzheimer’s or cardiovascular disease, giving her the tools to image, detect, treat and monitor such diseases, providing an essential foundation for enrolling on a PhD in any biomedical field.
Panos studied, while Jessica trained as an Engineer. Both would like to apply their extensive knowledge of mathematics, physics and engineereing to biomedicine. As part of the MSc they will work alongside neuroscientists or cancer biologists, gaining the critical skills to develop novel imaging technologies to understand biological process, opening opportunities for a career in imaging science in either academic or industry.
Sunita has a strong academic record from her home country, but feels that a qualification for a leading UK university would dramatically improve her international career options. UCL’s ABI MSc will place her in a unique environment, allowing her to experience an internationally recognised laboratory, and develop an exceptional skill set in transferable biomedical subjects, giving her a broad choice of a career, whether in the UK or abroad.
Mark has extensive experience as a Radiographer, while Cassie has spent several years working in the Pharmaceutical industry. Both would like a change direction, have the challenge of a new subject, and established themselves as a recognised leader in preclinical imaging. This MSc, due to its prominent academic position, will provide all the skills and contacts necessary for developing a new line of research and career in biomedical imaging.

Where can this course lead me in terms of careers and employability?

  • The UK is leading the development of technologies in MRI, optical imaging, medical image computing and applications in neuroscience, cardiology and oncology.
  • Progress in UK academia and industry is currently hampered by a severe shortage of trained scientists in this technically highly sophisticated domain, with most leading UK labs recruiting heavily from aboard at the postdoctoral level. 
  • The opening of new preclinical imaging facilities at the University of Liverpool, University of Leeds, Imperial College London, The Crick, as well as established imaging centres at all leading academic institutes worldwide, is creating a wealth of opportunities for trained preclinical imaging scientists. 
  • Students will have direct contact with leading experts in the field and be given the opportunity to network with future employers.

"I'm currently pursuing PhD in Radiobiology and Diagnostic Imaging at University of Liverpool. My project is about quantitative analysis of treatment response in paediatric brain tumours in association with Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. This MSc greatly helped me in getting this PhD as I learnt about neuroimaging and image processing with Matlab which will be important part of this project. These skills are helping me a lot including basics of MRI advance imaging techniques. I'm a Dento-maxillofacial radiologist with clinical background and this MSc gave me very first preclinical experience in neuroimaging. It also helped me to understand physics and the basics of advanced imaging techniques. The Science Communication module has been very instrumental for gaining presentation skills and I'm really thankful to entire CABI team for all their hard work and support."

"After completing the MSc I was inspired to pursue a career in academia and now work as an imaging research assistant in CABI. My current project is to develop novel imaging techniques for early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. Specifically this involves developing advanced MR acquisition techniques such as arterial spin labelling and optimisation of sequence parameters through simulations, histology staining and microscopy of ex vivo brain samples. Having a biomedical sciences background I was able to learn concepts from other disciplines like physics, chemistry and maths. The MSc equipped me with a diverse interdisciplinary skillset that taught me the value of bringing ideas together across different disciplines. I really enjoyed the science communication module as it allowed us to talk about research in a fun, interesting and creative way. I would like to thank everyone in CABI for the encouragement and support throughout the MSc.”

Where will the course take place?

The course is taught in Bloomsbury, the heart of London at the world class UCL Centre for Advanced Biomedical Imaging and linked to UCL hospitals – UCLH, Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, Cancer Hospital and National Hospital for Neurology. We do not offer any online or distance courses at this time.

Students on full-time Masters programmes study for a full calendar year and students are expected to study beyond the end of the third term to prepare their dissertation in time for submission at the end of August.

How do I apply?

Students are advised to apply as early as possible due to competition for places and those applying for scholarship funding (particularly overseas applicants) should take note of application deadlines. We also recommend students who would require a Tier 4 visa to apply early to avoid delay.
