This is also called a content-based syllabus. The aim is to study a certain topic e.g. understanding a political movement, whilst using the foreign language, so the students are learning content and language at the same time, although the language learning is incidental rather than the focus of the class. Topic-based differs from task-based in that task-based is more concerned with the cognitive and communicative processes than with actual content. Topic-based syllabuses are used frequently with immigrants who need to learn ‘about’ a new place, and its social and cultural practices as well as the language.
Examples: Task Chains, Hogelands
