A Journey Through Online

Language Learning

Syllabus Type > Grammatical (Product based approach)

This type of syllabus is also called formal or structural, as it is a collection of forms and structures of the language taught. Forms could be nouns, verbs, etc., and structures could be sub-clauses, questions, etc. The notion underlying this is that language is a set of rules to be learnt. The content is graded depending on perceived complexity, even though seemingly complex grammatical structures are not necessarily the hardest to learn. This type of syllabus has been heavily criticised in the last few decades, but nevertheless still informs many language courses, albeit combined with functional and situational approaches.
