A Journey Through Online

Resources > Subtitling at Dotsub

Open website: http://dotsub.com

Step 1: Upload a video clip
- The clip (Video or audio) should be no larger than 20MB.
- Click on tab Post New Video on the right-hand menu.
- Insert details about the clip (such as the title and a short description…) as required.
- Leave default license.
- Do not tick Make public video.
- Browse for clip and Save.
- [A progress bar opens. The longer the file, the longer it takes to upload]
- [It also takes some time to be processed once uploaded. To find out if it has been processed, refresh the page by clicking the tab MyVideos in the upper menu.]

Step 2: Add subtitles (Transcribe)
- Select the tab MyVideos in the upper menu. You see all uploaded video clips, subtitled and not subtitled ones. DotSub.com does not offer an option to edit and change a subtitled video.
- Click on a ‘fresh’ video. Next to the video window, find and select the orange link Waiting to be transcribed.
- Watch video in player and pause – restart to check the exact time you want a subtitle to appear and disappear.
- Insert the subtitle in the appropriate field next to the video window. Then insert the start and end times for the subtitle in the time fields. This is done by overwriting the default values either by using the number on the main part of the keyboard (NOT the number field) OR by keeping ctrl & shift down and then click the arrow up/down key.
- When the times are the way you want them add the subtitle to the video/audio by clicking the green +.
- Repeat the process for all subtitles.
- At this stage you can still edit each subtitle and make changes to it.

Step 3: Finish and share the clip
- When you are happy with the subtitles, you can finalise them by clicking on the green tick mark annotated with Mark this transcription complete. You will get a message that once you have done this, you won’t be able to change it any more.
- You are done!
- Now you may want to send a link to someone to look at your subtitled video.
- Click on Share below the video window and then e-mail in the pop-up list. The e-mail window may be half hidden behind the video, but if you click on the link Use Address Book the e-mail window jumps on top of the screen and you can fill in the details and send it.
- Note that as the clip is not public, only those people you send the link to can see the clip and only IF THEY HAVE AN ACCOUNT with dotsub.com.
