Recording with Realplayer v11 (Windows)

Information and download: http://uk.real.com/player/win/

IMPORTANT!! Many videos on websites are protected by digital rights management (DRM). These videos cannot be downloaded. It is a matter of trial and error to find pages that permit download (there are still plenty that do!). To practise the process, we will use a website which is guaranteed to work: the CETL website!

Step 1: Open Internet Explorer 7 (IE7). (Firefox 2 also works, but currently Firefox 3 doesn’t.)

Step 2: Open http://www.lww-cetl.ac.uk > Reflection and Research > Research Seminar Series > Previous Seminars.

Step 3: Select one (NOT the Nigel Chapman session, as it is very long and will take a long time to download).

Step 4: The video will start to play. While it plays you will see a button with a message at the top of the video asking you ‘Download this Video?’ The button will disappear after a few seconds, but you can always start the recording process by right-mouse-clicking on the video and then selecting ‘Download this video’ from the context-menu.
Click on this button to download the video you are watching. (You can stop the video now, if you like, the download process will continue.) The ‘RealPlayer Download & Recording Manager’ window will pop open with a list of downloaded and downloading videos.

Step 5: Once the video is completely downloaded, you can play it in or remove it from the ‘RealPlayer Download & Recording Manager’ and in theory you are done…

You may have the following questions:

How do I find the downloaded video files?

Open RealPlayer, click on MyLibrary in the upper main menu bar, select ‘Downloads and Recording’ in the left menu bar and find a list of your video files. (The files are stored in a hidden folder at: c:\Documents and Settings\your_username\Application Data\Real\RealPlayer Downloads. If you insert this path in the file explorer, the folder will open and you can access the video files. You can find this path in the upper menu Tools > Preferences… > Download & Recording)
How can I play the video on another computer?
In RealPlayer there is a function to Burn/Transfer in the upper main menu bar. Here you can choose to burn a CD. You have the choice of transferring your clip to a removable disk (a memory stick for example), but only the audio will be transferred. To transfer the video to a memory stick you have to find the file on the hard disk (see above) to copy it to a memory stick.
Which players can play the recorded videos?
Well, RealPlayer can and sometimes only RealPlayer, which means you have to make sure that that RealPlayer 11 is installed on the computer where you want to show the video. An .flv file can be played with VLC media player as well. An .ivr file only RealPlayer can play.
Can I edit and cut the video clips? No.

The RealPlayer Downloader ‘jumps to life’ and downloads the video that is currently playing. If the video is stopped before it has finished, the download is discarded.

Step 4: In the RealPlayer Downloader, the video is only temporarily stored. You have to click ‘download’ to confirm you want to save it on the hard disk. You can play the video out of the ‘Downloader’ window and view the Downloads folder on the hard disk, where all downloaded videos are saved.
