Scope and content

This is the personal library of F. H. Hayward who was an Inspector for School for the London County Council between 1905 and 1937. The collection covers a wide range of subjects and the material dates c1875 to 1950 and represents Hayward’s interests which included moral and religious education, education for citizenship and education policy and teaching practice. The collection is Hayward's personal library, and covers a wide range of subjects. It is believed that this is not the complete library as some non-education material was not retained.

This collection reflects the changes taking place in state-funded education from the mid-19th century onwards.  It also includes the works of the key education philosophers and pedagogues such as John Locke, Auguste Comte, Johannes Herbart (Hayward was a staunch Herbartianist), John Adams (who thought highly of him and valued his friendship), John Dewey, Ernest Gould and Edmond Holmes. There are also books on world religions including Hinduism, Judaism and Buddhism, as well as books by the theosophists, Annie Bestant, the fabians including Bernard Shaw and H. G. Well and the child psychologist G. Stanley Hall.

F. H. Hayward was a supporter of the secularist movement, and a leading member of the Moral Instruction League, founded in 1897 to further ethical and civic teaching on a non-theological basis in schools. Hayward was well-known in the education circles from 1915 to the early 1920s when he wrote many articles for the Times Education Supplement. He was known for the many ‘Celebrations’ he wrote for schools which bring together content from different school subjects to ‘celebrate’ a theme. This could be Empire Day, Beethoven Day and even a Eugenics Day which was a lesson in sex education for adolescents (published in The Eugenics Review). These ‘Celebrations’ are held in his library.

History

The Inner London Education Authority, which was previously the London County Council, donated the Hayward Collection to the IOE in 1990.
