Women in Research (WiR) 2021/22

Explore your career options and leadership aspirations; open to self-identifying female research or teaching staff at grades 6b-8.

About the programme

The 2021/22 programme launches with the 2021 Women in Research Conference.

A series of six intensive online masterclasses follows, tackling burning issues from decision-making in an uncertain world to impact, wellbeing, and authentic leadership.

Each masterclass will be followed by a small-group session, where discussions and support will be offered in a confidential setting.

Masterclass 1: Managing the transition to new environments, projects, and roles

Join us to learn how to be at your best when starting a new role, project or working in a new environment. Managing these transitions can often be difficult, bring a level of uncertainty or mixed emotions. We will explore ways to manage these changes and increase our effectiveness whilst staying in balance. A great way to start the Academic Year. Masterclass 2: Creating and nurturing effective collaboration

Research projects require a high level of collaboration to gain funding and get work done. However, there are often challenges and difficulties that arise in setting and developing collaboration projects.  

Join us to explore approaches and mindsets that can help you become more effective as a team member and a leader. We will draw on evidence-based research and best practice.

Masterclass 3: How to get heard, noticed, and listened to!

Sharing your knowledge, opinions, and voice is critical to your success. We may feel, at times, that we are not heard or listened to in meetings, conferences, or other settings.

Join us to find out how you can increase your communication effectiveness and voice as a researcher with openness and purpose. We will draw on evidence-based research and best practice.
 

Masterclass 4: The art of feedback: how to give, seek and receive feedback

Feedback helps us progress and increase our impact, and yet, we often find it hard to receive it. Understanding how people perceive us and what we do can be valuable information to adapt and succeed. Join us and identify how you can redefine the role of feedback and successful methods to give and receive feedback. We will draw on evidence-based research and best practice.

Masterclass 5: Shaping research culture: our role and influence

Research culture, the environment in which we work, is seen as an increasingly important contributing factor to support a thriving research community. So the big question is, "who can shape research culture"?

Join us to explore how women in research have a role to play how this can positively impact our wellbeing, research success and the wider research community. We will draw on evidence-based research and best practice.

Please register for the Masterclasses using Inkpath. The links to sessions will be distributed to registered participants before the event.

Past webinars, additional resources and forums for Women in Research programme can also be accessed via a dedicated Moodle course. You will be automatically enrolled by course administrators after you register on Inkpath.

Registrations on small-group coaching seminars are available to masterclass participants only (details will be shared during the webinar).

Learning outcomes

By the end of this leadership programme, you will:

  • Understand theories and frameworks of personal and leadership development, de-construct common myths around leadership and reflect on and assess your preferred leadership style
  • Determine the purpose, pathway and impact of your research, looking beyond its current scope.
  • Improve your ability in self-leadership, motivation, organisation and time management
  • Improve your ability to collaborate and connect with others to further research and personal goals
  • Explore potential career pathways within and outside research and develop a personalised career action plan with clear and attainable goals
  • Have a plan to manage the impact of your time spent outside of your research
  • Join a community of female researchers

Eligibility

Open to all women research or teaching staff at grades 6-8 (including trans women and non-binary people who are comfortable in a female-centred community).
