SELCS Turing Summer School in Madrid, Paris, Rome and Stockholm

A summer school in Madrid, Paris, and Stockholm focusing on cultural exchange and experience. Part of the Cities partnership Programme.

23 September 2022

The SELCS Turing Summer School gives students a credit-bearing (15 UCL credits) opportunity to acquire intimate familiarity with the rich past and vibrant cultural present of different European national and regional capital cities. The summer school programme went ahead in 2021 in Madrid, Paris, Rome, and Stockholm, with a maximum of 48 student participants. Other locations will be explored and offered to students in future years, subject to continuing financial support.

Each individual summer school is made up of two parts. The first half consists of two weeks of intensive group activity, led by a UCL academic or team of academics whose research focuses on the culture and language of the respective region. This part of the programme consists of a combination of intensive seminars, hosted by UCL’s local partner institutions, and site-specific learning activities, i.e. guided tours, museum visits, field trips, and plays. The module celebrates and re-narrates European cultural traditions, beyond the strictures of nationalist and nativist resentment.

We embrace heterogeneity and multiplicity, in sharp contrast with familiar ideas of national and regional identity as a homogenous cultural space. Diverse forms of site-specific learning and teaching serve to advance a dynamic, speculative range of creative-critical expression.
