PUDEME: Pre-urban demography in early medieval Europe in London and Stockholm

PUDEME will generate new understandings of social complexity in early medieval northern Europe. Part of the Cities partnership Programme.

23 September 2022

This project aims at interrogating the character and patterning of burial evidence in the regions of two major urban centres in northern Europe: London and Stockholm.

Both places emerged as major cities with significant maritime connections during the Middle Ages, but in both cases the focus of settlement and activity shifted within their regional setting over the course of their early development. PUDEME will critically review the archaeology from these respective regions, and share methods and approaches, to generate new ideas about the pre-condition for these global cities.

The project will organise a series of workshops in inspiring environments, assess and comparatively analyse the burial evidence from London and Stockholm, and identify future partners for collaboration and further research. The network will comprise a core team of scholars from UCL and Stockholm University, who will participate in two workshops, one in London and one in Stockholm. In addition, each workshop will invite colleagues from a broad constituency (academic scholars, period specialists, archaeologists, archivists, and curators).
