Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

IHA EDI 2

The Institute of Healthy Ageing supports justice, diversity, and inclusion in our labs. We recognise that too many communities have been excluded and underrepresented in science on the basis of race, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, socio-economic background, and intersectional identities among these groups. We have made a commitment to continuous allyship for marginalised and underrepresented communities.

This means, at a minimum:

  • Educating ourselves about justice and systemic discrimination against marginalised communities, including the history of racism and eugenics within our own university

  • Listening to and uplifting voices from these communities even when they challenge our assumptions and make us uncomfortable.

  • Seeking out and enacting ways to improve representation of marginalised communities in our seminar invitations, teaching, employment, and other activities.

  • Speaking out and pushing for change when we see microaggressions or institutional policies that disadvantage these communities, both within our labs and within the larger university community (from staff and low-wage workers to students and group leaders).

  • Making space and time for trainees to heal, take care of their communities, or fight for justice, and continuing to provide financial, career, and other support while they do so.

  • Donating our time and/or financial support to organisations that promote the success and well-being of marginalised communities in STEM or in the larger community. Some suggestions can be found in the links below.

The posters and inspiration for the pledge come from Sammy Katta.
