Postgraduate

The Bartlett is UCL's multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary faculty of the built environment. Our vision is a world where the systems and cities we build add to the wellbeing of both people and planet.

We are the UK's largest and most multidisciplinary faculty of the built environment. Alongside architecture and infrastructure, we are also interested in the invisible systems and structures that determine how we live together.

The Bartlett offers an exceptional range of study and research resources, technical facilities, and opportunities for collaboration. Studying with us is an opportunity to help push the boundaries of what we understand about the built environment.

Which postgraduate course format is right for you?

We offer a wide range of different degree formats at The Bartlett, with some key differences. Here are their key characteristics:

MA, MSc, MPA and MASc

MA, MSc, MPA, MASc (Master of Arts, Master of Science, Master of Public Administration, Master of Arts and Science) courses are usually tutor-led. They allow you to expand your knowledge in a particular area. The goal is to provide you with the skills and expertise to pursue further study and develop professionally.

Courses are delivered through different methods, such as lectures, seminars, workshops, case studies, placements and field trips. You should expect to carry out your own research, write essays and take part in individual and group project work.

Your performance will be assessed through course work and examinations. Finally, you will submit an individual dissertation, undertaken during the summer, on a subject of your choice.

These courses tend to last for between one and two years. Entry requirements vary.

MArch and MLA

MArch (Master of Architecture) courses provide students with the opportunity to carry out advanced study in architecture. Our Architecture MArch course requires students to have completed a first degree in architecture. Others MArch courses open to students from a range of disciplines.

MArch degrees focus on design and visual representation, so a background in a design/visually-orientated field would be useful. These degrees are aimed chiefly at those looking to advance towards becoming a registered architect.

The MLA (Master of Landscape Architecture) is a two-year master’s for applicants with suitable backgrounds who want to specialise in landscape design.

MRes

MRes (Master of Research) courses combine research opportunities with subject-specific taught modules.

This gives you greater freedom to explore and develop a field of study than is normally possible with a master’s. At the same time, you are able to enjoy the benefits of teaching and other aspects of taught postgraduate courses.

An MRes at UCL tends to last for one-year. Of this, around two-thirds (66%) is research, compared to one-third (33%) on a taught master’s.

You will invited to our annual MRes conference, which showcases the diversity of research courses at The Bartlett. This offers an interactive and engaging platform for networking and building relations with fellow research professionals.

Why study an MRes?

  • You want to immerse yourself in a research subject, but don’t want to pursue a full PhD
  • You want to build a strong academic foundation in preparation for a PhD
  • You already have some professional experience and would like to enhance your research skills and boost your career progression
  • You want to acquire new skills and training for a career change
  • You want access to the considerable networking opportunities offered by research courses at The Bartlett You are seeking greater flexibility, with fewer teaching hours to allow time for other commitments
