Entry requirements

A minimum of a second-class UK degree in an appropriate subject or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. A design/creative portfolio is also expected. Applicants will be asked to provide a link to a portfolio of their design work once their completed application has been received, and should not send or upload work until it has been requested.

The English language level for this programme is: Level 2

About this degree

Students gain an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the discipline of landscape architecture and the related profession, informed by current practice, scholarship and research. With design-led teaching and learning, they will learn how to design, using a range of techniques and research methods, equipping you to progress towards a career as a landscape architect. 

Who this course is for

Students with a UK undergraduate degree related to landscape architecture or similar with First or Second Class Honours or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. Candidates with another qualification and appropriate professional experience may also be considered.

What this course will give you

In the design studio, students will develop individual projects, documented in design portfolios, to increasing levels of complexity and ambition as the programme progresses, supported by tutorials, seminars, crits and interim reviews.

Students will work with a team of landscape architects, researchers and built environment professionals to inform your creative design practices.

This programme empowers students with the contextual knowledge of the history and theory of landscape architecture, alongside the ability to apply research to design and professional scenarios, be they speculative, theoretical or practical.

The foundation of your career

Students gain a highly specialist skill set with this programme. As well as the ability to design using a range of techniques and research methods, and an in-depth knowledge of the discipline of landscape architecture, students will develop skills in creative problem solving, making decisions and propositions in complex, challenging, ambiguous and open-ended situations.

Students will also develop skills in communicating, presenting, advocating, interelating and responding to people from a wide variety of backgrounds within a professional context.

Accreditation

This programme is professionally accredited by the Landscape Institute (LI).

Teaching and learning

Students are assessed through design portfolios, essays, illustrated reports and diaries. Students receive formative feedback on their work in progress via tutorials and seminars, as well as written reports. 

In terms 1 and 2 full-time students can typically expect between 17 and 20 contact hours per teaching week through lectures, workshops and tutorials. In term 3 students will be completing their own Portfolio’s research, keeping regular contact with their Portfolio’s supervisors.

Outside of lectures full-time students typically study the equivalent of a full-time job, using their remaining time for self-directed study and completing coursework assignments.

Modules

This is a two-year, 300 credit Master's degree.

This programme consists of ten modules, five per year, all of which are compulsory. 

Upon successful completion of 300 credits, you will be awarded an MLA in Landscape Architecture.

Students undertake modules to the value of 300 credits. Upon successful completion of 300 credits, you will be awarded an MLA in Landscape Architecture.

The MLA is a two-year programme. The published fees are for Year 1 only. Fees for Year 2 will increase by up to 5%, in accordance with UCL’s fees policy.

The tuition fees shown are for the year indicated above. Fees for subsequent years may increase or otherwise vary. Where the programme is offered on a flexible/modular basis, fees are charged pro-rata to the appropriate full-time Master's fee taken in an academic session. Additional costs

All students are required to pay a fee deposit of £2,000 for this programme.

Maximum cost to the student is £500.

Architecture students can expect to incur additional costs as part of their programme; however, the school aims to minimise these where possible. All students work differently so costs incurred depend on the approach they take to the brief given. The school encourages students to use recycled materials in their models and presentations – not only is it sustainable, but also cost effective and potentially innovative.

Tier 4 Student Visa holders are advised to meet the English language proficiency of their offer no later than the end of June, in order to allow sufficient time to obtain a CAS number and visa.

To accept your offer, you must pay the non-refundable fee deposit within 4 weeks and decline any other offers for programmes at the Bartlett School of Architecture. If you do not respond within 3 weeks, your offer will be withdrawn.
