Civil society organisations are often been turned to by policy makers, activists and politicians (e.g. the current debate over the 'Big Society'), as independent, apparently closer to the people they work with, or more responsive to change. Yet these organisations are also part of the same social world as the people they work with, subject to the same pressures and demands. This workshop brings together ethnographic accounts from a range of disciplines and regions to explore the social life of civil society organisations.
