A Glimpse into Student Life at UCL

14 November 2023

BSc Geography student and Campus Experience Ambassador, Salma, shares a glimpse into student life at UCL.

Students walking together at UCL Main Campus

At University College London (UCL), students are immersed in a vibrant environment that has a strong sense of community and encourages teamwork.

UCL plays a crucial role in shaping not only our academic skills but also contributing to personal growth and making friendships that last a lifetime.

Collaborative rather than Competitive

As one of the top universities in the world, UCL is renowned for its academic programmes where students thrive in an environment that cultivates a strong work ethic. What sets UCL apart is the collective motivation among students, creating a positive and supportive atmosphere. Contrary to the common perception of fierce competition, I have felt a strong sense of teamwork as a student here.

Main Library: Silent Companions

I find the UCL Main Library to be a haven. This space is dedicated to quiet and focused study, where the calm atmosphere allows for deep concentration. What is remarkable is the shared appreciation for the necessity of quiet focus among students. This mutual respect contributes to a peaceful coexistence in academic spaces.

Student Centre: Connecting beyond Class

The Student Centre at UCL is more than just a study space, it's a social hub. It's a meeting point where friends gather, providing a great environment for both casual chats and focused study sessions. With 24-hour access, I can tailor my study times to suit my preferences.

Community Atmosphere Everywhere

At UCL, lecturers are more than educators, they're your academic allies.

Getting through your academic journey can be difficult, but support is always provided. Whether it's through email or during scheduled office hours, the faculty at UCL is committed to helping students overcome challenges, both academic and personal.

The sense of community here extends beyond lecture halls, including departmental and societal hosted occasions. These opportunities enable me to bond with other students and create more friendships.

Flexible Jobs make Bright Futures

Balancing academics and part-time employment can be challenging, but UCL acknowledges the importance of flexibility. Throughout my studies here so far, I have been employed twice. These student jobs are designed to fit my academic schedule, offering an opportunity to gain work experience without affecting my studies.

UCL students can search for jobs on the Students’ Union JobShop and Unitemps.

Concluding

Life at UCL is a blend of hard work, teamwork, and support. The strong work ethic and inclusive community creates an environment where academic success and personal growth thrive together.
