At the end of the academic year 2019/20, UCL East kicked off the first ever virtual Lunch Hour Lectures at UCL.

You can watch back the recordings:

Our Planet, Our Health

Delivered by Prof Kate Jones, Chair of Ecology and Biodiversity at UCL and Academic Lead of the Nature-Smart Centre at UCL East, this lecture focused on the links and interdependencies between our health and the health of our planet, with particular reference to understanding how rapid global environmental change impacts the emergence and spread of high impact infectious diseases like COVID-19, Ebola or SARS.

Professor Jones also discussed how recent advances in the resolution and coverage of remote-sensing satellite data and cutting-edge machine-learning algorithms open up the possibilities of developing global early warning systems to prevent and manage future epidemics.

Contemporary Public Art at UCL East

Delivered by our Head of Public Art, Sam Wilkinson, with David Rickard, a Neo-Zealand artist who took part in the Trellis project, this lecture discussed UCL’s commitment to Public Art as an expression of the culture of UCL. Sam explained how we are working with artists to open up and inspire the university community and our important local neighbours. The presentation explored our commitment to collaborative working with academics and students to contribute to knowledge exchange and public engagement with a focus on UCL East and its Trellis Art Programme.
