Students aged 12–17 and living in Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets or Waltham Forest are invited to sign up to the free EAST Summer School to explore the creative, tech and design industries, through courses and webinars.

Academics from across UCL have come together to offer a series of sessions, next to our partners from East Bank and local organisations such as The Yard Theatre, Studio Wayne McGregor and Staffordshire University London.

The UCL courses will be:

  1. Design the future - introducing young people to the world of engineering by using a range of creative, problem solving and technical skills to work together in teams, to develop and design a 3D prototype. This will be a unique and fun opportunity for enthusiastic young people who enjoy making things with an interest in design, engineering and technology.
  2. An exploration of illustrations - learning from the past masters of illustration from the fields of medicine, architecture, natural history, science and beyond. Students will try out a variety of illustrative styles, in special online master classes with professional artists, before showcasing their chosen artwork in an online exhibition.

  3. The art and science of face filters - exploring the facial recognition technologies that lie behind these beloved selfie camera effects, students will use face paint, stickers, hair extensions and anything else they have at home to create a face filter. This very practical workshop will be followed by a discussion about identity, privacy, and the social impact of technology at a time when there is increased security and monitoring of the public.

Information about the other courses and registrations to the summer school are available on the East Bank website.
