Successful doctoral students must write well. Academic disciplines exist in their texts and practices, and a student’s success in their discipline will depend mainly on how proficiently and purposefully they can write. Supervisors play a key role in supporting the development of their students’ research writing and its dissemination, by encouraging regular writing and enabling progress by providing good feedback. Given the importance of good writing and the supervisor’s responsibilities in this field, it’s hardly surprising that the challenges of academic writing overwhelm many students, and supervisors may feel unprepared to mentor their students in this most crucial aspect of their work.

In this workshop we will: 

• Reflect on your own writing practice and the strategies you’ve developed to write effectively;
• Review pedagogies and practical suggestions for supporting PhD candidates to write effectively;
• Reflect on our own experience of giving and receiving feedback;
• Identify ways to build a healthy feedback culture.

Participants who have completed this course/session will be able to:

• Identify PGR writing challenges and pedagogies for supporting students to write effectively, including sources of support available at UCL;
• Analyse and manage the supervisor and supervisee’s roles and responsibilities in writing, editing, giving feedback, and preparing for submission;
• Reflect on your own strategies for supporting your students in their writing and giving effective feedback.
