Research summary
Alexander (Sandy) MacRobert (Professor ofPhotochemistry and Photobiology) is based in the Division of Surgery and InterventionalScience at UCL, which specializes in translational research involving closecollaboration between scientists (biologists, chemists and physicists), engineers and clinical academic staff. Professor MacRobert has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles and reviews and is head of the Centre for Nanomedicine and Surgical Theranostics. Before joining UCL as a lecturer, he held research fellowships at Imperial College and the Royal Institution, London and at the University of Bielefeld, Germany, where he held a Royal Society Exchange Fellowship. He was appointed as Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2008. He has extensive experience ofsupervising PDRAs (over 30 to date) and has carried out multidisciplinaryresearch on photodynamic therapy and photochemical internalisation ranging frombasic photophysical studies of photosensitisers to pre-clinical in vivo pharmacokineticsand therapy. His research is supported by the UK Research Councils (EPSRC, BBSRC, MRC),including studies on the development of nanoparticle-based tumour diagnosticsin collaboration with a UK SME (Nanoco) funded through Innovate UK.
