Research summary

Alexander (Sandy) MacRobert (Professor of Photochemistry and Photobiology) is based in the Division of Surgery and Interventional Science at UCL, which specializes in translational research involving close collaboration between scientists (biologists, chemists and physicists), engineers and clinical academic staff. Professor MacRobert has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles and reviews and is head of the Centre for Nanomedicine and Surgical Theranostics.  Before joining UCL in 1992 as a lecturer, he held research fellowships at Imperial College and the Royal Institution, London and at the University of Bielefeld, Germany, where he held a Royal Society Exchange Fellowship from 1983-85. He was appointed as Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2008. He has extensive experience of supervising PDRAs (over 30 to date) and has carried out multidisciplinary research on photodynamic therapy and photochemical internalisation ranging from basic photophysical studies of photosensitisers to pre-clinical in vivo pharmacokinetics and therapy. His research is supported by the UK Research Councils (EPSRC, BBSRC, MRC), including studies on the development of nanoparticle-based tumour diagnostics in collaboration with a UK SME (Nanoco) funded through Innovate UK.
