Research summary

Professor Vaidya's research has been in surgery, tobacco eradication, surgical oncology and several aspects of breast cancer - surgery, radiotherapy and oncology.

His early work in Goa with Dr Sharad Vaidya showed how sports sponsorship (of cricket matches) by tobacco companies initiates smoking amongst children in India. This work and the anti-tobacco campaign led to some of the toughest laws of the land towards reducing tobacco consumption, curbing the initiation of smoking at young age and reducing deaths from heart disease and cancer.

His research on Intraoperative Radiotherapy (IORT) was inspired by his original laboratory work in 1994, leading to the idea that breast cancer treatment with surgery and radiotherapy needs to be focussed and targeted. Working with Professor Michael Baum and Professor Jeffrey S Tobias, in UCL, London, Prof Vaidya developed the concept, tools (Intrabeam) and the surgical operative procedure (TARGIT IORT) to give targeted intraoperative radiotherapy to the tissues immediately around a breast cancer, after it is surgically removed (lumpectomy). He coined the acronym TARGIT- for TARGeted Intraoperative radioTherapy and it is commonly called Intrabeam TARGIT IORT.

The Intrabeam TARGIT IORT procedure has been now been used for 45,000 breast cancer patients treated in 260 centres in 38 countries worldwide. I would encourage the interested reader to visit the dedicated website for Intrabeam TARGIT IORT for more information and to read the publications on IORT for breast cancer

The TARGIT-B trial, funded by HTA - NIHR, which will inform us whether Intrabeam TARGIT IORT given as a boost is superior to the standard radiotherapy boost.

Here are some mentions of Prof Vaidya on University and affiliated Hospital websites

Here are some of his talks about breast cancer research including Intrabeam TARGIT IORT.
