Research summary

Professor Vaidya's research has been in surgery, tobacco eradication, surgical oncology and for better understanding breast cancer and for improving treatments (surgery, radiotherapy and oncology) of patients with breast cancer.

One of his early research outcomes led to the idea that breast cancer radiotherapy needs to be focussed and targeted. Along with his colleagues, he developed the concept, tools (Intrabeam) and the surgical operative procedure (TARGIT-IORT) to give radiation therapy to the tissues immediately around a breast cancer, immediately after it is surgically removed (lumpectomy). This procedure is called TARGIT- which stands for TARGeted Intraoperative radioTherapy. It is commonly called Intrabeam TARGIT IORT procedure and has been now been used to treat over 45,000 breast cancer patients in 38 countries worldwide. This research was included in the list of 5 most amazing health breakthroughs by National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) alongside the Oxford COVID vaccine and two COVID treatments
