Profile: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/sts/people/dr-carina-fearnley
Carina is an interdisciplinary researcher, drawing on relevant expertise in the social sciences on scientific uncertainty, risk, and complexity to focus on how natural hazard early warning systems can be made more effective, specifically alert level systems. She also has interest in the transdisciplinary potential of art and science collaborations around environmental hazards. Carina established the World Organisation of Volcano Observatories Volcano Alert Level Working Group, and edited the first publication dedicated to Volcanic Crisis Communication (Observing the Volcano World: Volcanic Crisis Communication). Profile/Website: Linkedin
Claudia is a researcher and practitioner working at the intersections of multi-species justice, One Health, biodiversity governance, food systems, and warning systems, integrating research, policy, and practice to address complex social, environmental and health challenges.
Currently a Doctoral Researcher with the Transforming UK Food Systems Centre for Doctoral Training, Claudia explores how biodiversity governance can be reimagined to prioritise care, justice for all species, and alternative approaches to development.
As a 2024 Planetary Health Equity Hothouse Future Leader Fellow at The Australian National University, Claudia is part of a global cohort of experts from diverse fields, building technical expertise, mobilising knowledge, and fostering networks through a program designed to address the interconnected challenges of public health, climate change, and social inequality through structural change.
Previously, Claudia served as a Senior One Health Strategy Lead in the UK Government, collaborating with eight organisations to co-develop and implement the UK's first department-wide vision for institutionalising One Health within Defra. Her role involved fostering cross-sector engagement through participatory and co-production methods with civil servants, ensuring diverse perspectives shaped the strategy. She worked to establish processes for integrating One Health across governance levels and policy areas to promote a prevention-focused approach to health and environmental challenges. Claudia also played a key advisory role in shaping the One Health component of the pandemic accord negotiations from their inception.
As One Health Warnings Head at UCL's Warning Research Centre, Claudia supported research, collaborations, and consultancy on multi-hazard, multi-sectoral warning systems. Her work focused on analysing the socio-economic and political drivers behind land use changes, climate impacts, and infectious disease risks.
Her education spans science and technology studies, food systems, and public policy, with studies at UCL, LSE, and the University of Oxford.
Maryam Rokhideh - Post-doctoral Research Fellow

Maryam is an interdisciplinary researcher specializing in the links between security, climate change, and development. Her research examines how communities respond to multiple and compounding risks, with current projects exploring community resilience, disaster response, and climate governance. Her work on complex risks and emerging threats spans different countries and builds on community-engaged and decolonial approaches. At UCL, she is currently working with the EU Horizon HuT Project to develop multi-hazard risk reduction tools to effectively deal with climate-related disasters. She has worked with governments, UN agencies, and other international organizations, and remains actively involved in policy consultations and contributions.
