DSD: Getting started with Stata (Campus-based)
Course Description:

Learn to do it write with Stata from the start.
This blended learning course is designed to help you to use Stata to import, manipulate, describe and analyse categorical and continuous data, and to produce plots and tables to support analysis.

This course involves around six hours of learning which takes place in workshops on campus.

Materials include exercise with solutions, links to short videos and, other reference material. While working through this material you will develop an example Stata script.

Once you have booked on the course you will be able to access all of the online materials in our Moodle course.

PREREQUISITES:

You should have a good understanding of statistical concepts. No prior experience with R is required, but experience using a spreadsheet application such as Excel would be an advantage.

IMPORTANT:

Once you have enrolled, please check that you have received a confirmation email from MyLearning. You will also receive an email with location details at least one day before the session.

Please arrive 10 - 15 minutes prior to the start of the course to allow time for logging in and downloading resources.

Objectives:
At the end of this course you will be able to:
  • Create simple charts of categorical and continuous data
  • Import data from Excel and from plain text files
  • Create Stata scripts (do files)
  • Calculate frequencies and descriptive statistics
  • Calculate correlation coefficients
  • Transform and recode variables
  • Create cross tabulations
  • Build linear regression models
Intended Audience:
This course is aimed at those with a good understanding of statistical concepts who wish to learn to use Stata to analyse their data.
