This MSc aims to equip students with the skills of analysis and design necessary for employment as professional civil engineers and give them a solid academic background for becoming chartered engineers. The Fluids route is for those students who want to further specialise in this subject, but also wish to improve their general background in other civil engineering disciplines.

Entry requirements

A minimum of an upper second-class UK Bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering or a closely related subject, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. Applicants with a good performance in the core subjects (design, structures, geotechnics, and fluids) or extensive work experience covering these areas may be considered. For non-civil or structural engineering candidates we offer a Graduate Diploma in Civil Engineering, recognised by our accrediting body (the Joint Board of Moderators), which can be used as a pre-qualifying year for the Civil Engineering MSc.

If your education has not been conducted in the English language, you will be expected to demonstrate evidence of an adequate level of English proficiency.

Who this course is for

This programme is most likely to appeal to students who have completed a BEng degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or similar) and wish to supplement this with a taught graduate Master's degree, thereby continuing their progression towards fully qualified professional engineering status in the UK or elsewhere.

Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering at UCL is an energetic and exciting environment. We carry out advanced research in structures, environmental engineering, laser scanning and seismic design.

This MSc covers all the major areas of civil engineering, reflecting the broad range of expertise available within the department and its strong links with the engineering profession across the UK and beyond. Accreditation

This degree is accredited as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired a partial CEng accredited undergraduate first degree. See www.jbm.org.uk for further information.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through lectures, tutorials, seminars, laboratory classes and field trips. The research project includes laboratory, computational or field work depending on the nature of the project. Assessment is through examinations, coursework, project reports and the research project.

The workload for students is approximately 40 hours per week.

This is typically made up of formal learning and teaching events such as lectures, seminars and tutorials, as well as self-directed study.

The PG Dip consists of four core modules (60 credits) and four optional modules (60 credits).

Modules

You undertake modules to the value of 180 credits, from which 60 are compulsory (in modules which vary with the selected pathway), 60 are optional, and 60 credits are carried by an individual research project.

You will be expected to complete in two years.

In the first year you undertake four compulsory modules to the value of 60 credits. In the second year you undertake four optional modules to the value of 60 credits as well as the 60 credit individual research project.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. Upon successful completion of 180 credits, you will be awarded an MSc in Civil Engineering (with Fluids). Upon successful completion of 120 credits, you will be awarded a PG Dip in Civil Engineering (with Fluids).
