Tribute to Dr Frank Sowrey

19 March 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr Frank Sowrey, former Divisional Manager, on Saturday March 16th 2024.

Dr Frank Sowrey

Frank joined the School of Pharmacy in 2020, just before the onset of the pandemic. His extensive research background in chemistry, coupled with his prior experience as Departmental Manager in the UCL Department of Economics along with his tenure at the University of Kent, equipped him with the expertise to lead the Professional Services Team at the UCL School of Pharmacy.

He made significant contributions within the School of Pharmacy and across the Faculty of Life Sciences, supporting research, education, and external engagement. Frank was not only a valued colleague and leader but also a mentor, role model, and advocate for the vital contributions made by professional service colleagues across the university. His dedication to excellence in research, education, and external engagement was unwavering.

Despite the challenges he faced, Frank remained committed to his work and continued to contribute to operational and strategic developments at the School of Pharmacy. He made the decision to take ill health retirement in July 2023 but stayed in touch with many colleagues, displaying a keen interest in the department and faculty's progress. He spoke highly of the palliative care provided by the NHS medical team and the support offered by the Pilgrims Hospice.

Professor Cate Whittlesea (Director), said: “Having worked with Frank as Director of the School of Pharmacy and previously as interim Director, and Head of the Research Department of Practice and Policy, I valued his experience as we navigated the challenges brought about by the pandemic. Frank was always willing to work with and support colleagues to identify the best solution to a problem or proposed development. I particularly valued the support and insight he provided when I became interim Director. A great friend and colleague who will be sadly missed.”

Frank’s legacy includes the creation of the 'Friday email,' initiated at the beginning of the pandemic to foster community and connectivity among Pharmacy colleagues, especially during times when many were away from the building. Through this platform, he not only disseminated Pharmacy/UCL news and initiatives, but also celebrated important milestones and achievements. Frank's passion for music was evident through his 'music for the weekend' shares, a cherished aspect of his Friday emails.

Former Director, Professor Duncan Craig said: “My heart goes out to Frank’s family and loved ones, for whom this will be an immensely difficult time, particularly given that we have lost him far too early. Professionally speaking, Frank’s input into the development of the School of Pharmacy was quite simply transformative. His genuine desire to instigate improvement combined with a wicked sense of humour made him not only extremely effective but also great fun to work with. I also have to mention the now legendary Friday emails which were very much his creation, including of course, his musical choices to see us into the weekend. I am grateful to have known him and grateful for all that he brought to the School.”

Director of Operations for the Faculty of Life Sciences, Suzy Adcock, said: “I know many of you worked with Frank over the years and will have some lovely memories of him. For me, he was a steadfast friend in the face of work adversity, and always gave a perspective which challenged how I was thinking about a particular problem. He has been much missed since he retired last summer and is a loss to the UCL community.”

Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Natalie, children and extended family and friends during this difficult time.
