Contact between parents and UCL

Information for parents about how we handle and share your child's data.

On this page you will find information about:

When does UCL contact parents

UCL, like all other universities in the UK, normally communicates only with the student in regard to their academic studies, health, exams and grades.

In some circumstances, when we have serious concerns about a student’s heath and/or wellbeing, we may contact their trusted contact. In all cases, contacting a trusted contact is done with the student’s best interest in mind. It aims to engage the student’s personal support networks, who can help keep the student safe and well. In most circumstances, we will agree this with the student in the first instance.

We rely on students to provide trusted contact details at the time of registering with UCL and keeping the details up to date and relevant.

Review our Trusted Contact Policy for further information on how to update contact details.

If you have serious concerns about a UCL student, you can alert our support services by completing the UCL Student of Concern form.

Alert UCL of an emergency situation on campus

Emergency situations at UCL should be reported on +44 (0)20 7679 2222. This number is monitored at all times.

Contact a UCL hall of residence

This is a list of all UCL halls, including contact details.

There are Wardens and Student Residence Advisers (SRAs) at most UCL residences. They provide support to students in the evenings and weekends and organise local events to help students feel at home and part of a community in their living environment.

More information about the Wardens and SRA teams, including contact details.

Find information about a student’s academic progress and exam results

UCL, like all other universities in the UK, normally communicates only with the student themselves in regard to their academic studies, health, exams and grades. In addition to this, we can only act on direct requests from students regarding changes of address, extensions to deadlines etc.

What to do if you cannot contact your child

If the student is staying in UCL halls of residence, and you know the name of the hall, you can contact the hall directly.

You can also contact Student Support and Wellbeing.

Data protection

Due to data protection regulations, UCL will not be able to provide information, including to confirm if the person you are calling about is a UCL student. We can take a message and ensure this is followed up on appropriately.
