Inaugural lecture of new seminar series: Biology of Sexes

2 November 2022

The phrase “biological sex” has been thrown about like confetti yet no one has bothered to ask us, biologists, what we think. So here we are, discussing the Biology of Sexes in our new seminar series.

The inaugural lecture was given by Lucy Cooke, the author of BITCH: A Revolutionary Guide to Sex, Evolution and the Female Animal. Lucy is a New York Times best-selling author, award-winning documentary filmmaker and broadcaster. In her talk she challenged the patriarchal view of evolution and how we think about sex and sexual identity.

With tickets for the event selling out within 24 hours, the talk was well attended and many joined the social event afterwards to continue to discuss this fascinating topic. It was the perfect start to what we hope will be an important series to give staff and students at UCL the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and broaden their understanding of the Biology of Sexes.

The Biology of Sexes seminar series continues this academic year, with plans for two more speakers who will challenge the preconceptions of biological sex and sex in biology, revel in the diversity of the animal kingdom and raise important scientific and societal questions.
