Interrupting UCL Students

If you are interrupting your studies your UCL Library membership and ID card will expire and you will temporarily lose access to our services and facilities until you return to your studies.

Whilst on an interruption of study, your Portico status will be changed, your UCL Library membership will expire and your UCL student ID card will be deactivated meaning you will lose access to the library buildings and study spaces.  The following Library services will also be affected whilst on an interruption of study:

  • You will not be able to borrow books and any books that you currently have on loan must be returned before your Portico 'date of interruption', as after this date the books will not renew automatically. If books are not returned, you will incur overdue fines.
  • You will not be able to use the Click and Collect service.
  • You will not be able to use the Scan and Send service.
  • You will no longer be able to log-in to My Account via Explore with your student credentials. Please make sure you export in advance any lists of saved records which you need to keep.

Please note that during your interruption of studies you will still be able to access electronic resources via Explore, without logging-in to My Account. You can search for electronic resources on Explore and follow the links as usual. When you click on a link you will be taken to a UCL authentication webpage before access is provided.

When you return to your studies your Portico status will be updated and access to Library services and facilities will be restored.

Using the Library whilst on an Interruption of study

If you wish to access the library buildings and borrow books whilst on an interruption of study then you can apply for Alumni Borrowing Membership, free of charge, for the duration of your interruption.

  • Apply through the UCL Library Membership Form as UCL Alumni.
  • Please use your personal email address.
  • In the 'Is there anything else that you would like us to know?' field at the bottom of the form, please state "Alumni Borrowing Membership, Free of Charge for Interruption of study"
  • Your membership will last until your 'Expected return to study' date in Portico, at which point your status will be updated and your UCL student ID card and usual Library access to services and facilities will be reinstated.
  • Alumni borrowing membership allows you to borrow up to 5 books.

Please note that the Alumni membership whilst on your interruption of study does not allow entry to the Student Centre nor to the study space booking system.  You will also not be able to place inter-library loan requests.
