Information on how members of staff working at affiliated NHS Trusts with whom we hold a Service Level Agreement can join and access UCL's libraries.
At present as many medical libraries have yet to reopen their membership services, we are temporarily offering two membership options to NHS employees.
Registering for the document supply service
NHS employees can apply for Library membership allowing them to request an electronic copy of journal articles and book chapters, normally available via the UCL Library Explore Access Points.
Please visit the Requests from UCL's e-journals and e-books webpage for further details.
Registering for full Library membership (including renewals)
NHS employees wishing to collect a physical membership card* to book and access a study space at their home library, or use our Click and Collect Service, should complete the online registration form and attach:
- A passport style photo of yourself (colour, facing camera).
- Photo/scan of your NHS staff ID card.
- Photo/scan of proof of address (for instance, valid driving license or recent utility bill).
*Library cards will need to be collected from the location stated in the confirmation email.
Further information
NHS Home Library
NHS staff are assigned to their nearest medical library site, which is their "Home" library. Please see respective library site webpages for full details of their opening hours and services.
If the end of contract is less than three months from the date of application to join the Library, membership will be for reference use only and borrowing will not be possible.
For staff on rotation, Home library privileges apply while the staff member is based on site. If staff rotate to a site served by another UCL Library, Home library status normally moves with them. If staff rotate to a Trust not covered by the Library Service Agreement, library privileges over and above reference access are governed by local agreements, and may vary from site to site. Reference services only are provided to non-medical students on placement.

Honorary UCL Contracts for NHS Staff
NHS Staff with UCL Honorary Contracts are eligible to access the full range of UCL's electronic library resources both on and off-site. There are two stages involved in obtaining access:
Stage 1. Obtaining a UCL Honorary Contract
The application process needs to be sponsored by the relevant UCL academic department. Full details of the process are available on the SLMS departmental webpages (see the section on Honorary Appointments). Note that there are different guidance and application forms for Medical School-related (UCLMS) and other School of Life & Medical Sciences-related appointments.
Stage 2. Obtaining an ISD computing account, userID and password
Once confirmation of a UCL Honorary Contract is received, the relevant departmental computer representative should be contacted to request access to an ISD computing account.
