Scope and content

This collection comprises books held in the personal library of Nicholas Hans (1888-1969). They date from 1770 to 1980. They are mainly on comparative education and on the education systems of Europe.

Nicholas Hans was born and educated in Russia, and taught at the University of Odessa. After the 1917 Revolution he settled in London and was associated with King's College. In the 1920s he began to work on the Year Book of Education, continuing this work until the outbreak of the Second World War. In 1946 he was appointed lecturer at King's College, becoming a Reader in Comparative Education in 1948.

During this time he collaborated with Joseph Lauwerys in the Comparative Education Department of the IOE, University of London, supervising higher degree students and arranging overseas trips, and he continued these activities after his retirement in 1953.

He wrote and published on a wide range of topics, including comparative education, educational policy in Russia, and the history of Russian and eighteenth century education

History

The collection was bequeathed to the Institute by Dr Hans. Later books of historical importance have been added to the collection from time to time.
