Ca 680 books (1530-1930).

Scope and content

The collection consists of c680 works, most of them dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. In addition to some 370 original texts, there are a number of facsimile editions in microfilms and photocopies.

Dr. Ian Michael (1915 – 2014) was the first professor of education at the University of Khartoum. In 1964, he was appointed the first Vice-Chancellor of the University of Malawi. Dr. Michael become the Deputy Director of the IOE in November 1973. 

Together with Christopher Stray, Dr. Michael was also the founding member of the Textbook Colloquium (established in 1988 but now defunct), which was an international scholarly organisation dedicated to the ‘interdisciplinary study of textbooks of all kinds’. Concurrently, a journal, Paradigm, was published biannually. Topics vary and include articles on the history of education, literature, national identity and cultural representation. 

History

In 1998, Dr. Michael donated his collection of books on the teaching of English grammar, together with some associated research materials and papers.
