History

The collection includes music education books from the personal library of Bernarr Rainbow (1914-1998). Rainbow was a musician, a composer, lecturer and a leading authority on the history of music education. He was Director of Music at the College of St Mark and St John, Chelsea. This was a Church of England teacher training College. Between 1973 and 1979, he was the Head of the School of Music, Kingston Polytecnic (now Kingston University). Rainbow was also a prolific author writing about all aspects of music education through the centuries. His books are available in the Library. An assessment of his contributions to music education is available in the edited book by Peter Dickinson, Music Education in Crisis: The Bernarr Rainbow Lectures and Other Assessments. Boydell & Brewer, 2013.
