Scope and content

This collection consists of the first issues of a variety of magazines, newspapers, professional and special interest journals, with a varied readership that includes women and children. They date from the mid-19th to early 20th-centuries. The subjects include the Boer Wars, Empire, Citizenship, First World War, Story-Telling, Poetry, Music etc.

History

The collection was put together by Major William Wilson Grantham (1866-1942), one time Deputy Chairman of the London County Council, and deposited at County Hall in 1933; it then passed to the IOE, along with other materials from the Inner London Education Authority, in 1990.
