Scope and content
This collection consists of books and pamphlets dating from c1600 to 1940. They cover all aspects of education published before 1940. There about approximatey 1,200 books published between the 16th and 18th centuries, but the majority of the books date from the 19th and 20th centuries.
Included in this collection are about 150 bound volumes of 19th and 20th century pamphlets amassed by the Ministry and Departments of Education and deposited with the IOE in 1992. These pamphlets form 3 series: Education miscellanies, Education pamphlets, and Tracts on education, and include works by Henry Brougham and Sir James Kay-Shuttleworth. The pamphlet series is available to view on microfilm in the Main Library.
The modern books include the works authored by the key educationalists that represent education in Britain.
History
The collection belonged to the Board of Education, later the Department of Education and deposited the collection in 1992.
