Scope and content

The collection consists of books, journals, pamphlets, yearbooks and speeches which he gave during his career. Some are in different languages as Lauwery’s work was re-published many times. The collection includes content on many subjets, including education theory, education systems, education practice, and morality. It also includes content on science, including textbooks which are authored by him (he was the ‘Methods Tutor for Science’ in the early 1930s.

Joseph Lauwerys (1902-1981), a Belgian-born scientist, was regarded as one of the most famous comparative educationalist in Britain between 1950 and 1970. He established the field of comparative education at the IOE and played an important role in the foundation of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). He joined the staff of the IOE in 1933 as Lecturer in Methods of Science; in 1941 he became a Reader in Education, before being designated Professor of Comparative Education in 1947. He remained at the Institute in this position until 1970, when he was appointed Director of the Atlantic Institute, Nova Scotia. He was an editor of the World Education Yearbook for nearly 20 years.

History

The collection of material is Lauwerys' personal library which he bequeathed to the Institute. His personal papers are held in the IOE Archive.
