Greek Level 1 plus

Prerequisite for entry

Having completed level 1 or equivalent. This course is not suitable for complete beginners.

Term duration

10 x 2-hour classes.

Progression

After 20 hours students may progress to level 2.

Aims and objectives

  • to enable students develop their basic skills (i.e. listening, speaking, reading and writing) in Modern Greek in a variety of everyday situations;
  • to increase awareness of aspects of Greek culture within a European / global context.

A communicative method of teaching / learning is fostered, although aspects of grammar are covered as well.  Students are aided to reflect on their learning skills and experiential / autonomous learning is encouraged, including the use of interactive ICT material.

Course content

Main topics/themes to be covered:

  • further practice on greetings, introductions and socialising in a formal or informal context 
  • further practice on classroom, home and office vocabulary / understanding and giving instructions
  • money and shopping / enquiring about prices
  • food and drink
  • expressing likes, dislikes and feelings about activities and people
  • expressing opinions
  • nationalities
  • exchanging information about someone’s age
  • time and days

Linguistic structures/ Phonetics

  • verbs: present tense and simple imperative / active and reflexive verbs  
  • definite and indefinite articles
  • nouns: genders / nominative and accusative case / introduction to the plural
  • adjectives (genders / concord with nouns)
  • pronouns:  demonstrative, interrogative etc…
  • adverbs and prepositions
