Application guidance notes

Please read these guidance notes carefully before you start your Bowman Scholarship application.

  1. Please read the eligibility requirements for this scholarship to ensure you are eligible and in a position to verify your circumstances before completing the form.
  2. You will have an initial ‘first contact’ confidential discussion with the UPC Admissions Coordinator. Please get in touch by email at clie-bowmanscholarship@ucl.ac.uk to schedule this.
  3. You will not be charged for your application.
  4. We advise that, as you prepare your application, you save your work as a Word Document named in the following way: “Last name, First name UPC Bowman Scholarship Application”.
  5. You will be sent a link to the application form which you will have to fill in online. You will be able to add or email separately any required documents. The subject of the email should be “Last name, First name UPC Bowman Scholarship Application”.
  6. Please see an outline of the information and documents you will be asked to provide (if available) as part of your application below.
  7. You should refer to the list of accepted documents using the checklist provided in section 3 of the table below.
  8. Closing date for receipt of applications is August 1 2021. Applications received after this deadline will not be eligible and will not be considered.

Section 1

Personal details

Your application for the scholarship is completely confidential and the selection panel will only be able to take into account information that you provide.

Immigration status

You will be asked to confirm by ticking the appropriate box that you can provide a copy of your current immigration status. You must provide documentation you have received from the Home Office in relation to your asylum or human rights claim. If your immigration status changed, you will be required to inform us immediately.

Your current personal/family financial situation

You will be asked to provide your personal income as well as your family’s/guardian’s income if relevant or applicable. We are interested in financial information relating to the 12-month period immediately prior your application.

Past studies, training, voluntary work, professional experiences

You will be asked to provide, if available, evidence of your past studies in school, high school or in other courses you may have attended. You will also be able to add information on any training, voluntary work or professional experiences you may have had.

Support network, special support

We will ask you to provide information on your current situation with regards to any support network you may currently have, and whether you think you require special support.


Section 2

Your future study plans

It is important that we know as much as possible about your intended undergraduate studies and degree aim. You should give the name the degree programme at UCL you would like to apply to. See list of UCL degrees.

Your studies on the UPC

You will be asked to say which modules you would like to take in either the Sciences and Engineering or in the Humanities and Social Sciences pathway. Please refer to our module selection guide.

Your English abilities

We will ask you if you have an English qualification (e.g. IELTS, TOEFL), and if you have been speaking and/or studying in English in the past.

Your personal statement

In your personal statement, we would like to know why you want to study your undergraduate degree aim. You may also write about any information that you feel should be taken into account to support your application. This is the opportunity for you to tell us about your personal and academic backgrounds in your own words. There are questions included for guidance.

Reference form

You will be asked to submit a reference form. You will have to contact your referee and asked him/her to fill in the form and to email it to clie-bowmanscholarship@ucl.ac.uk.


Section 3

We cannot consider your application unless we receive immigration evidence and evidence of income. Please provide as much evidence as you can from the lists below.

Evidence of income

We are interested in the financial information relating to the 12-month period immediately prior to your application to the UPC.

  • Recent bank statements (annual bank statement or account summary)
  • Payslips
  • Employer letter confirming employment
  • Letter from registered care home confirming residence
  • Proof of Asylum Seekers Allowance
  • Proof of any bursary, grant or scholarship support

You must type your name (which will be taken as your signature) and date this section for your application to be valid.
