Apply for protected time for research

29 January 2024

Have you been approached by industry or other groups to take on a study – but couldn’t?

A new funding scheme aims to free up time for clinical staff to do research at UCLH.

If your application is successful, UCLH Research Directorate will fund a portion of your time (up to 2 PAs or equivalent 0.2 WTE) for you to pursue new research opportunities.

The call is part of our commitment to growing the UCLH portfolio (including commercial research) and to offering research opportunities to a greater diversity of patients at UCLH and within the local community.

You can apply for this funding if:

  • you are a UCLH clinical professional (from any clinical staff group)
  • you have, or are confident in attracting, a pipeline of commercial research which can deliver new research in the next 18 months or have a grant which can deliver a study in the next 18 months
  • have no more than 1 current PA (or equivalent WTE – i.e., 0.1) for research.
  • have support from your clinical division.

Although applications are welcomed from across all specialties, we are keen to receive interests which stimulate research in less represented groups and portfolios, including studies:

  • which enable large numbers of participants to take part.
  • able to recruit from under-represented patient groups.
  • which fall within clinical areas where there are currently no or few research opportunities available to patients (e.g., diabetes, endocrine, gastrointestinal, immunology, respiratory)
  • with the potential to recruit jointly at UCLH and in the local community.

How to apply

  1. Read the guidance for this scheme - available as a Word and PDF document
