New EU data protection regulations
25 May 2016
New EU data protection regulations which aim to create a high, uniform level of data protection across the EU fit for the digital era have entered into force.
Researchers will not be adversely affected by the new regulations as they will include provisions for data use in research with 'broad' rather than 'specific' consent required from individuals.
The new rules will apply from 25 May 2018. EU Member States are required to transpose them into their national law by 6 May 2018.
