Prospective Research Student FAQs

 Application

Q: What are the requirements for a successful PhD application to the IoN?
A: Applicants require:
1.    Confirmed Primary Supervisor
2.    Confirmed source of funding for full duration of degree
With both, students should be able to make a successful PhD application.

Q: How do I find a source of funding?
A: There are plenty of useful websites available such as

The IoN also accepts plenty of students through various UKRI scholarships which can be found under “Programmes” here.

Q: How do I find a supervisor?
A: All UCL researchers have a profile on UCL IRIS. Applicants can search IRIS via name, theme, department etc. and find supervisors who share similar research interests. Once identified, applicants are welcome to reach out to the supervisor directly with their CV, cover letter and research proposal. If you already have a source of funding, it is vital that this is mentioned. In some circumstances, supervisors may be able to provide support and help you find funding.

Q: Are there any other methods to submit a successful PhD application to the IoN?
A: An alternative route is to apply for a Research Assistant or Technician post at the IoN. This position will help you gain research skills and have a better understanding of research at the IoN. With these skills, you’ll be able to submit a more competitive scholarship application. Alternatively, your line manager may be able to assist you in applying for funding to do a PhD alongside your job.
