Dr. Rahul Phadke, Consultant in Neuropathology
Diagnostics Dr Rahul Phadke leads the diagnostic paediatric pathology service for the Dubowitz Neuromuscular Centre (DNC) together with Professor Caroline Sewry. The DNC is a leading national and international clinical and research centre specialising in neuromuscular disorders affecting children and is designated by the NSCT as the national specialist diagnostic and advisory service for congenital muscular dystrophies and congenital myopathies, as well as being designated as a muscle centre by the muscular dystrophy campaign. The DNC paediatric muscle biopsy service in addition continues to provide a tertiary pathology referral service encompassing all neuromuscular disorders, making it the largest paediatric muscle biopsy service in the country. In addition to muscle biopsy diagnosis, we have also developed expertise in analysis of skin, fibroblast and chorionic villus specimens to complement the diagnosis of complex muscular dystrophies using various immunolabeling techniques and flow cytometry analyses.
Dr Phadke together with other consultants in the division contributes to diagnostic surgical neuropathology reporting including brain and skin biopsies, and neurological post mortems (hospital and coronial).
Teaching and Lecturing Dr Phadke is the educational lead for year 4 medical undergraduates rotating at Queen Square. He regularly lectures on paediatric and adult muscle pathology at various post graduate courses (BNS, EPNS, EuroCNS), has co-authored the muscle chapter in the 9th edition of Greenfield’s neuropathology and is actively involved in providing muscle pathology training for national/international visitors to the DNC.
