EPSRC i4health Centre for Doctoral Training - Overseas Studentships

The i4health CDT aims to recruit outstanding students to undertake fully-funded PhD studentships at UCL.

Entry Requirements:

  • Applicants are expected to have achieved (or are predicted) a first-class or upper second-class honours undergraduate degree (or equivalent international qualifications or experience). An MSc is also preferred, though not essential.
  • Our preferred subject areas are Physical Sciences (Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Physics). Applicants with degrees in Chemistry or Life Sciences are welcome but applicants must be able to demonstrate strong mathematical skills.
  • Applicants should have a demonstrated interest in medical imaging.
  • Applicants whose first language is not English are usually required to provide evidence of proficiency in English by UCL. Further details can be found here.
  • You must secure the agreement from a non-clinical supervisor in the CDT to supervise you.

Candidates are assessed against the following criteria:

  • Academic excellence - as demonstrated by past academic results evidenced by transcripts, awards, and referees’ comments  
  • Research Potential - as demonstrated by the candidate’s research experience to date, their enthusiasm for research, the research plan and its originality and potential societal impact  

Application:

  • Complete online application form by accessing the UCL application portal and apply under the programme title: MPhil Medical Imaging: RRDMEISING01. Type ‘CDT Overseas Scholarships’ in the Name of Award 1 field on your application to ensure your application is considered.

Documents:

You must contact your chosen supervisor to notify them that you would like to be considered for a CDT i4health Overseas Scholarship. Once you have secured their agreement to supervise you, you must submit the below documents to them. They will then submit your pack to the panel via a submission portal.

The mandatory documents are as follows:

  1. CV – Please ensure your CV is up to date and lists all publications, past/current prizes, awards, and scholarships. 
  2. Personal Statement - Your opportunity to tell us about you, why you are interested in the subject matter and why you wish to join the CDT i4health. 
  3. A lay summary of your research proposal, on a Word or PDF document (max. 200 words).  When writing your research proposal/outline please note that the selection panel members are not likely to be specialists in your subject. Please describe clearly, the aim of your research, the methodology you will use and the potential significance of this study to your discipline. It is extremely important that you pay attention to this summary and write in as clear language as possible as it may significantly affect the outcome of your application. The proposal should be written by you, not your supervisor or any other member of academic department staff.
  4. Academic transcripts - Please ensure that each academic transcript submitted includes clarification on the grading scale/range of grades possible for that degree.
  5. 2 References:
  • Reference number 1 should relate to your most recently completed university programme/degree (or the one you intend to complete, if applicable).
  • Reference number 2 should relate to your current or intended research programme/project, for which you are seeking funding. This reference MUST be provided by your research supervisor at UCL.

You must apply for admission and submit the additional information to your department no later than Wednesday 31st May 2023.

If selected for the shortlist, you will be asked to attend our interview day. The format of will consist of a 40-minute panel-based interview and include a 10-minute power point presentation. 

If you do not hear from us within 30 days of the deadline unfortunately you have not been shortlisted for interview and we will not be considering your application further.
