David Attwell grew up in Bletchley, and then did a first degree in physics and a PhD in Physiology in Oxford. He then spent 2 years as a post-doctoral researcher in Berkeley, California, studying the retina. On returning to the UK, he moved to University College London, where he has remained ever since. He has carried out research on a wide range of subjects including the properties of cells in the brain, the physics of glutamate transporters, events leading to stroke, myelination of nerve cell axons, how neuronal computation is powered, the control of brain blood flow and how a fall of blood flow contributes to Alzheimer's disease.

He has chaired the Neuroscience grant review committee of the Wellcome Trust, organised a highly successful 4-year PhD Programme in Neuroscience, and was previously on UCL Council. He was made a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2000 and of the Royal Society in 2001. He is currently President of the Physiological Society.
