UCL celebrates the vital work of volunteers at the 2019 UCL Volunteering Awards
On Wednesday 22nd of May, the UCL community came together to celebrate the transformational work of volunteers who support UCL from student recruitment right through to building our global alumni communities.
Last year two new awards, the Alumni Volunteer of the Year and Alumni Group of the Year Awards, were established to celebrate the outstanding efforts of our alumni volunteers.
This year’s award winners are:
Alumni Volunteer of the Year
Usha Back (BPharm 1997, PhD Pharmacy 2002)
Having taken a different career pathway herself, Usha is passionate about opening up student’s minds to the alternative careers available. After graduating from her Masters in Pharmacy, Usha has gone onto to pursue a career pharmaceutical financial consulting. Usha saw a gap in students’ education after making the leap from pharmacy to finance. That’s how she began lecturing within the School of Pharmacy on drug commercialisation.
Due to popular demand, in 2017 Usha worked with UCL staff to turn her lectures into three half-day workshops. She has gone on to provide mentoring and support to students during their PhD’s.
Usha has continued to support the School of Pharmacy widening participation efforts and we are thrilled to acknowledge her contributions through the award of Alumni Volunteer of the Year.
Usha commented on the award saying: “I have gained so much through UCL and the School of Pharmacy. Volunteering is my way of saying thank you and giving back, not only to the students but also to the professors and lecturers.
“I think it was so wonderful just to be nominated for the award so the fact that I won is just icing on the cake."
