Timescales
To allow time for both preparation and proper costing of the proposal, the process must start at least 20 working days before the deadline. All Fellowship proposals will be subject to a critical review by a member of academic staff as part of the submission process. Most importantly, please note that many of these fellowships need to go through an internal selection, so interested applicants should contact us well before the nominal deadlines.
To apply
The best initial approach is to contact Head of Group, Prof. Giovanna Tinetti and Group Manager, Mrs Kay Nakum. Please note, each Fellowship scheme has a different deadline and the dates often vary from year to year. They will be added here when they have been announced by the relevant funding body.
Pay Scales
You will need to agree your pay scale with your departmental sponsor. The lowest grade a Fellow can be costed at is Grade 7, Point 29 and it is normal that there is an additional spine point for every year of postdoctoral experience you have. So for a Fellow with one year of postdoctoral experience at the beginning of the Fellowship it will be grade 7, point 30. UCL pay scales can be found at - Pay Scales
Royal Society
- The Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowships scheme offers a recognised first step into an independent research career for outstanding postdoctoral scientists and engineers who require a flexible working pattern due to personal circumstances, such as caring responsibilities or health issues.
- The University Research Fellowships scheme aims to provide outstanding scientists, who should have the potential to become leaders in their chosen field, with the opportunity to build an independent research career.
STFC
- The Ernest Rutherford Fellowships will enable early career researchers with clear leadership potential to establish a strong, independent research programme. They will encourage talented researchers in UK universities to remain in the country and at the same time attract outstanding overseas researchers to the UK.
- In recognition of Stephen Hawking’s exceptional contributions to scientific knowledge and popularisation of science, UKRI is supporting Stephen Hawking Fellowships, delivered jointly by STFC and EPSRC, to support and develop the next generation of visionary scientists in theoretical physics at the beginning of their careers.
- The Webb Fellowship will allow you conduct your own research programme using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) whilst enhancing community use of the telescope and increasing its impact.
Other Fellowships
- Marie Curie Fellowships aim to enhance the career development and training of researchers through international and intersectoral mobility.
- Future Leader Fellowships, the support will enable each fellow to tackle ambitious and challenging research and innovation and develop their own careers.
- The 1851 Research Fellowships are intended to give early career scientists or engineers of exceptional promise the opportunity to conduct a research project of their own instigation; an ultimate objective is to contribute to the knowledge base required for a healthy and innovative national culture.
