The Big Move: Packing

20 August 2021

There are a lot of important things to remember to bring to university, and you want to make sure you arrive with everything you need. To help, UCL students have prepared a list of what to bring with you to halls.

A list of useful things to bring to university

If you need to pack light, there are many options to make things a little bit easier.

Check out UniKitOut. You can buy bathroom, kitchen, or bedroom packs with everything you need ready in your halls before you arrive at UCL.

There are also plenty of places around campus to buy what you need on arrival.

Big supermarkets such as the Camden Town Sainsbury’s have lots of options for household accessories such desk lamps, stationery, and kitchenware.

For decorations, you could head down Tottenham Court Road and look in Flying Tiger, Muji or Primark, where you will find everything from cushions to posters.

To help you prepare for move-in day, here’s a list of things our students recommend bringing for your first year at UCL:

Bedroom:

  • Duvet and duvet cover
  • Mattress protector
  • Decorations to make you feel at home (photos and posters)
  • Laptop and electronics ((phone and charger, headphones, extension cord – needs to be fused and trailing-style!)
  • Desk lamp
  • Cushions to make your space more comfortable
  • Laundry basket
  • Clothes horse – It’s helpful to have a clothes horse that you can always use, but make sure you keep your windows open otherwise your room will get damp!
  • Stationery
  • Books and speakers to provide some light entertainment. A good speaker is also amazingly helpful in setting the vibe for a flat gathering and will help to lift spirits.
  • Important documents:
    • Passport and/or ID
    • UCL acceptance letter (useful for opening a bank account)
    • Any insurance documents (e.g. travel/contents etc.)
    • Student finance documents
    • Bank details and cards
    • NHS number (don’t worry if you can’t find this or don’t have one yet!)
  • Clothes – bring enough but not too many!
    • Casual clothes, underwear, and shoes, and maybe a smart outfit or two
    • Warm winter-wear (it can get cold in London!)
    • A raincoat (a must-have in the UK)
    • Gym/sportswear
  • Battery-powered lights to customise your room
  • Command strips to hang posters – these were a life saver for me, and my mass poster wall. Stronger than blue-tac or glue stickers, command strips are easily attachable and do not mark the wall.
  • Any medication and supplies (e.g. plasters, painkillers, prescription medications, contraception, etc.)

Bathroom:

  • Shower essentials: shampoo, conditioner, body wash, razors etc.
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Towel and a spare
  • A shower caddy if you are using a shared bathroom. It’s helpful to keep on hand so that you can easily transport your bathroom items into the shared bathroom.
  • Hand towels and soap

Kitchen:

  • Plates and bowls – two of each should be sufficient for one person, any more would take up a lot of space in a shared kitchen
  • Mugs
  • Glasses
  • Cutlery
  • Bin bags, foil, and cling film– maybe buy these in your first grocery shop with your flatmates!
  • Tupperware
  •  A chopping board
  •  A tea towel
  • Pots and pans, but not too many - Remember if you’re sharing a kitchen you’ll need to share the space with your flatmates!
  • Water bottles
  • You could bring a food shop with you or go grocery shopping with your new flatmates!
