Reading Room Closures

We regret that the Librarianship reading room is now closed until further notice and that it will not be possible to obtain material from the collection for the time being. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

The Physics and Chemistry reading room is also temporarily closed but staff may fetch items for you on request. Please speak to us at the Help Point on the ground floor.

Science Library Closure - 24th and 25th June

Owing to the scheduled refurbishment work on the lobby (see below), the Science Library will close at 21:00 on Friday 23rd June and re-open at 08:45 on Monday 26th June. This is to allow for the installation of new security gates.

We apologise in advance for any inconvenience this may cause you.

Ground Floor Refurbishment Final Phase

Between 12th and 23rd June, work will take place on the final part of the refurbishment of the ground floor. This work will focus on the transformation of the lobby area and will include the installation of new security gates.

To allow for the gates to be installed without interruption, the Science Library will close on the weekend of 24th and 25th June. We apologise in advance for any disruption this may cause and hope you will appreciate the improvements that this work will make to your experience of using the Science Library.

Science Library Help Point

You will find us at our new Help Point in the Learning Laboratory on the ground floor, working alongside colleagues from UCL ISD. The desk is immediately visible as you walk through the main entrance into the ground floor area. Please visit us if you need help or information or if you wish to collect something that we are holding for you.

We hope you will enjoy using our new Help Point and we look forward to hearing your responses to the new service. We also have a cafe on the ground floor of the Science Library selling hot and cold drinks and cold snacks.

Research Grid Locker Keys

Keys for the 50 lockers in the Research Grid are available on a first come-first served basis from the Help Point on the ground floor of the Science Library. If all lockers are in use you may reserve the next available one by speaking to a member of staff.

Please note that this facility is only available for postgraduate students.

Laptop Loans

Need a computer? We have a laptop loans service in the Science Library. These are located in the Leaning Laboratory on the ground floor. One bank of laptop loans is next to the stairs in the cluster area and one bank is next to the entrance to the Library cafe.

Self guided tour of the library

Users of the library can now familiarise themselves to general library resources and collections and make the most of all our services and facilities, by downloading our self guided tour of the library.

Address and contact details

Subject coverage and guides

The Science Library houses collections relating to the following subject areas. For a detailed guide to the Library's provision within a particular subject area, select the relevant link below:

The Library is located in the DMS Watson Building on Malet Place. The easiest way to access it is to enter Malet Place via Torrington Place and walk down towards the archway visible in the distance. The building is located on the left hand side just before the archway is reached.

Disabled access

We offer a range of other facilities for users with particular requirements which are listed separately.

There is a Help Point situated in the middle of the Learning Laboratory. Please approach staff here for help with all aspects of the service including collecting Store and Inter-Library Loan items. You may also pay fines and other charges here.

Self Service

The UCL Science Library has self-service facilities for borrowing, renewing and returning one week and standard loan books. Short loan books are currently stored in the basement. Please ask a member of staff if you wish to borrow one and they will arrange to have it fetched for you.

Borrowing, Renewing and More

Four quick and easy to use loans machines are located in the Learning Laboratory on the ground floor. Just scan the barcode on the back of your Library card and enter your PIN number (set initially as 4 digits, DDMM of your birthday) to borrow and renew your books, to check reservations and view your Library account.

The machines will produce an optional receipt after each transaction showing the date and time that your loans are due back.

These facilities offer the ease and speed of multiple book issue.

The Learning Laboratory also has two machines for returning one week and standard loan books (including books borrowed from Store). Unlike an ordinary book drop, the machines will clear the books from your Library account immediately. Just place a single book at a time into the machine. When you have returned all of your books, the machine will produce a receipt for your records.

Remember that you can return as many books as you want, but only one at a time.

Short Loan Collection

Short loan books are currently stored in our basement. Please ask a member of staff to fetch a book for you if you wish to borrow it.

Items requested from the off-site store can be collected at the Help Point. Any reference items are for use in the Science Library only – these include theses, periodicals (borrowable by UCL staff for one week), poetry store and other rare volumes. Visit the Stores webpages for more detailed information.

Inter-Library Loans

UCL staff and students who request books or journal articles not available in our own libraries can collect them at the Help Point. The items must be relevant to the applicant’s academic work, and not easily available from other libraries nearby. There is a £3 fee to pay on collection. Further information can be found on our Interlending & Document Supply webpages.

There are twelve multi-functional devices in the library which offer copying, scanning to email and printing for UCL staff and students. All other visitors to the library can use the devices for copying. All copying is subject to copyright regulations.

Using the machines:

UCL staff and students need to present their UCL ID at the device to activate it. Credit can be added to your account using cash at the available kiosk.

All other visitors should obtain a log-in code and credit their account at the kiosk.

Staff and students should send printing to the printer named "print-ucl".

Cost of copying and printing:
  • A4 black and white (single or double-sided) = 5p per sheet
  • A4 clour (single-sided) = 25p per sheet
  • A4 colour (double-sided) = 40p per sheet
  • A3 black and white (single or double-sided) = 10p per sheet
  • A3 colour (single sided) = 50p per sheet
  • A3 colour (double sided) = 90p per sheet

For further details, please visit the print@UCL web pages.
