New Science Library Help Point
Our service is due to switch over to a new location from Monday 9th January. You will find us at our new service desk in the Learning Laboratory on the ground floor, working alongside colleagues from UCL ISD. The desk will be immediately visible as you walk through the main entrance into the ground floor area. Please visit us if you need help or information or if you wish to collect something that we are holding for you.
We regret that we will be unable to register new members in the Science Library from Monday 9th January until further notice. If you wish to join the library during this period, you may do so at The Information Point at the antrance to the Main Library or at any other UCL library.
We hope you will enjoy using our new Help Point and we look forward to hearing your responses to the new service.
Research Grid Locker Keys
Keys for the lockers in the Research Grid are available on a first come-first served basis from the Collection Point on the ground floor of the Science Library. There are 50 lockers and these will be made available until Friday 16th December in the first instance. If all lockers are in use you may reserve the next available one by speaking to a member of staff.
Please note that this facility is only available for postgraduate students.
Need a computer? We have a laptop loans service in the Science Library. These are located in the Leaning Laboratory on the ground floor. One bank of laptop loans is next to the stairs in the cluster area and one bank is next to the entrance to the Collection Point.
Self guided tour of the library
Users of the library can now familiarise themselves to general library resources and collections and make the most of all our services and facilities, by downloading our self guided tour of the library.

The Science Library houses collections relating to the following subject areas. For a detailed guide to the Library's provision within a particular subject area, select the relevant link below:
The Library is located in the DMS Watson Building on Malet Place. The easiest way to access it is to enter Malet Place via Torrington Place and walk down towards the archway visible in the distance. The building is located on the left hand side just before the archway is reached.
We offer a range of other facilities for users with particular requirements which are listed separately.
There is a help point situated in the middle of the Learning Laboratory. Please approach staff here for help with all aspects of the service.
There is a separate collection point for reserved items (including Store and Interlending items). You may also pay fines and other charges here.
The UCL Science Library has self-service facilities for borrowing, renewing and returning one week and standard loan books. There is also a dedicated self-service Short Loan Collection for 3 hour and 2 day loans.
Borrowing, Renewing and More
Three quick and easy to use Smart Serve machines are located in the Learning Laboratory on the ground floor. Just scan the barcode on the back of your Library card and enter your PIN number (set initially as 4 digits, DDMM of your birthday) to borrow and renew your books, to check reservations and view your Library account.
The machines will produce an optional receipt after each transaction showing the date and time that your loans are due back.
These facilities offer the ease and speed of multiple book issue.
The Learning Laboratory also has two machines for returning one week and standard loan books (including books borrowed from Store). Unlike an ordinary book drop, the machines will clear the books from your Library account immediately. Just place a single book at a time into the machine. When you have returned all of your books, the machine will produce a receipt for your records.
Remember that you can return as many books as you want, but only one at a time.
Short-loan collection room
The Science library has a self-contained short-loan collection which houses teaching collection items and other high demand reading list material on 3 hour or 2 day loan. Books can be borrowed and returned on the self service machines located within the short-loan room. An alarm will sound at the exit gate to the short loan collection if you try to take a book that is not issued to you out of the room and into the learning laboratory.
Please note, only UCL staff and students are eligible to borrow items from the short-loan collection.
Please consult the opening hours, above, for availability of the self service facilities.
There are twelve multi-functional devices in the library which offer copying, scanning to email and printing for UCL staff and students. All other visitors to the library can use the devices for copying. All copying is subject to copyright regulations.
Using the machines:
UCL staff and students need to present their UCL ID at the device to activate it. Credit can be added to your account using cash at the available kiosk.
All other visitors should obtain a log-in code and credit their account at the kiosk.
Staff and students should send printing to the printer named "print-ucl".
Cost of copying and printing:
- A4 black and white (single or double-sided) = 5p per sheet
- A4 clour (single-sided) = 25p per sheet
- A4 colour (double-sided) = 40p per sheet
- A3 black and white (single or double-sided) = 10p per sheet
- A3 colour (single sided) = 50p per sheet
- A3 colour (double sided) = 90p per sheet
For further details, please visit the print@UCL web pages.
There are three Information Systems cluster rooms where UCL staff and students can access the full range of available electronic resources through the Library Services webpages.
Information Training Sessions
Regular training sessions on electronic library resources are held in the DMS Watson Teaching Cluster. For dates and times see Library Information Skills Training.
Print journal loans
Print journals are not borrowable in the Science Library.
Stores journals may be borrowed by staff only for one week but are available for reference only by students.
Inter Library Loans
Books and periodical articles which are not already held in any of the UCL libraries, and are not easily available from any other nearby library to which UCL members have access may be requested on inter-library loan. For further information see Interlending & Document Supply.
