Contingency plans for assessment, progression and awards

Information on contingency arrangements for assessment, progression and award of degrees as the coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak accelerates.

On March 13, Academic Committee approved proposals from Education Committee to move all Term 3 teaching online; plan assessment alternatives to invigilated exams; and reduce the amount of further formal assessment for first-year undergraduates this year.

These actions are being taken to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our students, staff and visitors. We know that staff may be worried about how to implement them, and the longer-term impact for their students and academic programmes.

Exams and Assessment Contingency Panel

The Exams and Assessment Contingency Panel, chaired by Professor Anthony Smith, is reviewing UCL academic regulations in light of these circumstances. The panel are working to determine what, if any, adjustments are needed to ensure that students are not unfairly disadvantaged in assessment, and that academic standards and academic integrity are maintained.

Our priority is to ensure student progression while maintaining the standards that make UCL awards so respected and valued.

We are also working with the relevant professional bodies to make sure that the alternative assessments offered by staff meet their standards and requirements.

Comments or questions

The group is meeting regularly to work through these complex issues and scenarios. As details of changes to regulations are confirmed, we will communicate them to Faculties and Departments and update this page with guidance and resources.

If you have any questions about the working group or would like to propose potential risk areas for the group to consider, please submit questions or comments via the Teaching Continuity email address.
