Introduction to Academic Integrity - new Moodle course for taught students goes live
6 November 2019
The online course helps educate students about Academic Misconduct; help promote to your students by adding it to your Moodle site.
A new short course is now available to help students develop good academic practice.
Introduction to Academic Integrity is a 12-part Moodle course based on an existing three-hour workshop by the UCL Institute of Education (IOE). It includes reflection activities, as well as informative sections on forms of plagiarism, how to reference and where to find sources and support.
The course aims to:
- support reflections on current practices around academic integrity
- improve understanding of academic integrity and academic misconduct
- foster conversations between staff and students about academic integrity
- help develop a culture of academic integrity.
Taking around 20 minutes to complete, the course is intended to form part of departmental student inductions from 2020-21 onwards.
Add the course to your Moodle site
Moodle site owners are encouraged to add Introduction to Academic Integrity to their Moodle site to help make it visible and easy to access, as well as promote the course through departmental and faculty channels.
Students should complete the course early on in their studies so they are aware of the regulations before they take assessment.
While the course is not compulsory, any student who has engaged in poor academic practice or academic misconduct will need to take it again, as well as meeting their Departmental Tutor, Departmental Graduate Tutor or Programme Leader to discuss their work.
If Academic Misconduct is confirmed, a student can fail the module concerned, jeopardising their potential to achieve a 2:1 or a First.

A teaching guide on how to contextualise the course for your discipline is now available on the Teaching & Learning Portal.
