New library guide supports teaching and learning in higher education

13 December 2017

A new library guide (LibGuides) brings together resources on good practice in university teaching and learning.

LibGuides

Nazlin Bhimani, Research Support and Special Collections Librarian in the Institute of Education, has developed the LibGuide for ‘Teaching in HE’. This guide complements the resources and staff development opportunities offered by UCL Arena Centre for Research-based Education.

What is LibGuides?

LibGuides is a digital guide to aid exploration of Europe’s largest Education library.  This international guide includes education resources and websites from around the world as well as the IOE Library's international holdings.

The guide will be particularly useful for teaching and support staff on UCL Arena, our professional development pathway for teaching, which leads to nationally recognised fellowships accredited by the Higher Education Academy (HEA).  In 2016/17 over 240 UCL staff who teach or support learning at UCL gained Fellowship.

How can library resources help you?

If you're applying for a UCL Arena Fellowship you will need to show that you meet the criteria of your chosen Fellowship Descriptor in line with the UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and supporting learning in higher education (UKPSF). Knowledge and use of the relevant literature is important.

You will need to  demonstrate that you 'engage in continuing professional development in subjects/disciplines and their pedagogy, incorporating research, scholarship and the evaluation of professional practices' (UKPSF Area of Activity 5).  Framework professional values must include the use of 'evidence-informed approaches and the outcomes from research, scholarship and continuing professional development' (UKPSF Professional Value 3).  To fulfil this requirement, you need to link the research evidence in the literature to your chosen approaches to helping students to learn (and/or supporting learning).

Further resources

LibGuides also has a sister site called LibAnswers where IOE Library services provide quick answers to questions that are posted on the site or via Twitter, SMS and chat.

The expert IOE librarians are available to provide support and advice on searching for a specific resource.
