Supporting PGR Student Writing and Offering Effective Feedback (Online)

UCL's Arena Centre is delivering this session, which is open to all new and existing research supervisors.

Successful doctoral students must write well. Academic disciplines exist in their texts and practices, and a student’s success in their discipline will depend mainly on how proficiently and purposefully they can write. 
Supervisors play a key role in supporting the development of their students’ research writing and its dissemination, 
by encouraging regular writing and enabling progress by providing good feedback. 
Given the importance of good writing and the supervisor’s responsibilities in this field, it’s hardly surprising that the 
challenges of academic writing overwhelm many students, and supervisors may feel unprepared to mentor their students in this most crucial aspect of their work.

In this UCL Arena Centre workshop we will:

• Review some of the challenges experienced by research students when writing. 
• Consider expert advice about supporting research student writing and developing effective feedback strategies 
• Share your own experience of writing practice  
• Discuss strategies and examples of good practice 
• Tackle some scenarios 
• Review the resources on offer to you within UCL and beyond 

After attending this session, you will be able to: 

• Select appropriate pedagogies for developing PGR students’ writing  
• Recognise the advantages and disadvantages of different modes of feedback 
• Apply strategies for delivering effective feedback 
• Identify roles and responsibilities for editing doctoral theses 
• Signpost resources for further writing support
